About this Event

NatWest is excited to announce the second Payments Hackathon, this time in both Manchester and Chennai. You will spend 48 intense hours collaborating in teams made up of coders, designers, entrepreneurs and business people to create a working prototype to showcase. Come with a cool idea and watch it spring to life within a short space of time.

The Brief:

You will be given the opportunity to work in a collaborative style to deliver creative solutions to meet the needs of our customers. As the industry changes as a whole, with new players and incumbents racing to deliver new, innovative solutions to customers; regulators and industry shapers are also ensuring that the industry is safe, secure, scalable and future-proof. Looking to the future, there is scope to utilise this information and data to deliver new innovations.

This year’s the theme is Payments Data and the challenge: How can payments data create intelligent solutions to meet the needs of our customers?

How will it work?

Over the two and a half days you will work with your team to build a prototype and to create a solid pitch to support it. Finally, you will pitch to senior business leaders with the potential to win some very exciting prizes.

Happy to support you:

There will be on-ground support. Engineers will help you with technical queries and mentors will guide you towards the perfect pitch. NatWest will provide sandboxes for you to develop test and implement your idea in an almost real time environment.
Join us for a great couple of days with food, refreshments and like minded people. The only requirement is to come with an open mind, energy and enthusiasm!

What’s a Hackathon?

A Hackathon is a fun event in which software developers, designers, and business people collaborate intensively to develop awesome projects in 48 hours.

What’s the end product?

A prototype of a new and innovative idea that is related to the brief.

What is the theme?

Payments data: How can payments data create intelligent solutions to meet the needs of our customers?

Who owns the IP for my idea?

Intellectual property rights in any Innovation will belong to the party who creates or develops them. Please see the Terms and Conditions for further information.

What support will be available?

There will be people on hand to help with technical setup, sandbox testing, industry expertise and presentation practice. Every step of the process will be fully explained during the weekend.

Who are the participants?

Corporates, University students, FinTech companies, Startups – everyone is welcome!

Do I have to come with a team?

No! We will help you find a cool team to join if you come on your own or with a friend. If you do wish to be in a team with a friend, please register individually and let us know via email with the list of people in your team and we will try to accommodate this – please note that dependant on participant volumes we may not be able to fully accommodate this.

What’s the maximum team size?

Up to five individuals.

Should I bring a laptop?

Yes, if you have one!

What else should I bring with me?

Please bring the email or mobile ticket confirming your event registration. Please also bring one form of Photo ID with you. If you are a student, please carry your valid student ID.

Do I have to be a (software) hacker/programmer?

No, anyone with bright ideas and energy is most welcome!

What if I’ve never been to a hackathon?

Perfect! Come and have a great first experience!

What should I come with?

You can come with ideas that help people experience banking in a new way, so get creative and build something innovative and unique.

Will there be prizes?

Yes, and the potential chance to present to a range of judges.

Will there be free food?

Yes. And drinks! And fun activities will be lined up throughout the event.

What if I have a dietary requirements?

If you do have any requirements, please let us know when registering.




1.1 The Hackathon is a creative competition event arranged by National Westminster Bank Plc and/or its affiliates (collectively, “NatWest”). NatWest, You and other participants of the Hackathon will compete to deliver innovative digital solutions to enhance the payments experience for our customers (“Innovations”).

1.2 To take part in the Hackathon, you must register at www.eventbrite.co.uk (“Eventbrite”) on or before the registration date listed on Eventbrite. The number of participants is limited and NatWest may close registration at any time. In the event complete and correct information is not provided, registration will be considered incomplete and therefore invalid.

1.3 You will participate as part of a team with a maximum of 5 members. All members of your team must meet the eligibility criteria contained in these Terms. Each team member must have their required information entered on the registration form. Each team is solely responsible for its own cooperation and teamwork. NatWest is not responsible for, and will not assist in, resolving any dispute between team members.

1.4 You must be over 18 years of age to participate in the Hackathon. NatWest reserves the right to request proof of ID.


2.1 Intellectual property rights in any Innovation will belong to the party who creates or develops them. You represent and warrant that any Innovation is and will be your own original work and does not and will not infringe the intellectual property or proprietary rights of any third party, including, without limitation, any third party patents, copyrights or trade marks.

2.2 Any third party intellectual property rights used by you during the Hackathon must be clearly identified and all applicable licence terms and conditions must be made available to the other participants. You are responsible for obtaining all appropriate consent in and to such third party intellectual property. You will be required to provide evidence of consent to NatWest upon request.


3.1 The prizes for the winning Innovation(s) will be announced on the first day of the Hackathon. A panel will be responsible for judging the winners.

3.2 You agree that the decision of the judges is final in relation to any prizes that may be awarded.

3.3 The winners will be announced on the last day of the Hackathon.

3.4 Each winner is responsible for the payment of any taxes on the prizes and for any other costs and expenses associated with the acceptance of and use of the prize.


4.1 You must not act in any unlawful manner, for any unlawful purpose, or in any manner inconsistent with these Terms, or act fraudulently or maliciously; nor transmit any material that is defamatory, offensive or otherwise objectionable; and not use or promote offensive or illegal material. You agree that participation in the Hackathon will not breach any duty of confidentiality or contractual rights owed to any third party.

4.2 NatWest reserves the right to refuse entry or remove and disqualify a participant from the Hackathon at its sole discretion at any time for any reason.


5.1 Your Innovation must comply with the following rules and you may be disqualified if NatWest has reason to believe, in its sole discretion, that your Innovation does not comply with the following:

(a) It must adhere to these Terms;

(b) It must not violate the terms of use of any social media service, website, mobile application, software or any other platform used;

(c) It must not contain, depict or refer to any crude, vulgar, obscene, sexually explicit, disparaging, discriminatory, offensive, illegal or otherwise unsuitable language, activity or other content;

(d) It must not contain, depict or refer to any content which disparages or refers negatively to NatWest , the Hackathon, or any other participant; and

(e) It must not contain any content that violates any law or any third party’s rights.


6.1 You acknowledge that the Hackathon is a public event. News and media of the Hackathon, participants and Innovations may be circulated on social media and in the press.

6.2 You agree that your name, image, photographs, video and description of any Innovation may be used by NatWest on its website, in promotional material and in any publicity accompanying or resulting from the Hackathon including but not limited to any press, blogs or articles on social media. You authorise NatWest to publish accounts and images of your experience and Innovation on its website, and via any other marketing tools used to advertise and publicise the Hackathon and NatWest.

6.3 NatWest will also be allowed to publicise the names of the winners in connection with the Hackathon.


7.1 Except as expressly stated in this clause, NatWest shall not be liable to you, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, arising under or in connection with these Terms for any of the following: loss of profits or revenue; loss of business opportunity; loss or corruption of data; or any indirect or any consequential loss or damage. Our total liability, whether in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise and whether in connection with these Terms shall in no circumstances exceed a sum of £100.00 sterling. Nothing in these Terms shall operate to limit or exclude any liability for death or personal injury arising from NatWest’s negligence; loss caused by fraud; and any other loss which by law cannot be excluded or limited.

7.2 You agree that NatWest is not liable for: (1) any loss or damage that may occur to you or to your property which may be caused directly or indirectly from your participation in the Hackathon; (2) your receipt, use or redemption of any prize(s); or your inability to receive, use or redeem any prize(s); or (3) any loss of work or data due to power, network, hardware or software failure or malfunction.


8.1 NatWest reserves the right to cancel, modify or suspend the Hackathon in whole or in part for any reason at its sole discretion. NatWest shall not be in breach of these Terms by virtue of that cancellation, modification or suspension.


9.1 NatWest reserves the right to amend these Terms at any time.

9.2 Each of the conditions of these Terms operates separately. If any court or competent authority decides that any of them are unlawful or unenforceable, the remaining conditions will remain in full force and effect.

9.3 NatWest’s failure to enforce any term of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.

9.4 These Terms shall be governed by the laws of England. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be referred to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England.
